Plum Glazed Ham

I made a mini-version of this delicious ham for just the two of us by getting a tiny pre-sliced ham from the deli section, but the big version isn't any more difficult.  The glaze can be made days in advance; I would wait until ready to cook to pour half the glaze over the ham and then you just bake.  Your house will smell delicious and you'll be able to spend your time with your guests rather than in the kitchen.

Plum Glazed Ham

Ingredients

  • 1 shank end ham (bone-in), sliced, about 10 lbs.
  • 2 cups plum jam, jelly, or preserves
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • salt and pepper, to taste
Serves 8 - 10
Cook time: 1 hour and 40 minutes

Preheat oven to 350.  Set ham on roasting rack in roasting pan, put about 1/2" water in the pan, make sure it is not touching the ham (this will help keep your ham moist and will help keep the drippings and glaze from burning - you may need to add more water as the ham cooks).
Meanwhile, in a medium sauce pan combine plum jam, mustard, vinegar, cloves, cinnamon, salt and pepper over low heat for about an hour.  Brush ham with glaze and cook 10 minutes per pound (you can begin cooking ham while glaze is still cooking) - about 1 hour and 40 minutes for a 10 pound ham.  Brush throughout cooking.

*In the U.S., hams are sold fully cooked, you really are just thoroughly heating the ham through.
